Are you simply restoring to the standard firmware, not one downloaded from a third party site?
The 1002 error can be pretty persistant. Try a few of these steps, its a bit overkill, but it should take care of it. First, reboot your computer (this will make sure its not any potential issues with components from iTunes not being opened). Actually, while your doing this, you might want to reset the USB drive, Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord from the back of the computer. Leave it unplugged for at least 30 seconds, then turn back on.
Make sure your iPhone is connected to the BACK usb port, not through a Hub or keyboard usb port. And not through one on the front (there is a difference).
Now, with your iPhone plugged in, but turned off, and iTunes already open:
Hold down power and home buttons together for 10 seconds, then release ONLY the power button, keep home held in for up to 30 seconds, until iTunes sees your iphone in recovery mode (its actually DFU mode), and if you entered DFU correctly your iPhone screen will be blank. If you see the iTunes logo on it, your only in recovery mode and will likely see the error again.
Now try to restore and let us know what happens.
