1. Take any of your songs in your iTunes (make sure your in the Music Folder), and click Get Info
2. Go to Options, and change the start at stop time to any 40 sec margin, such as 1:30 and 2:10 (it Has to be EXACTLY 40 seconds)
3. Mark the boxes next to Start and Stop Times
4. Get out of the Info box, right click or ctrl click the song, and click Create ACC Version.
5. Once the song converts, the 40 second version should appear next to the original.
6. Delete the 40 sec. version off of iTunes, but not the computer.
7. Find the file on your computer, and change the file from m4a, to m4r.
8. Drag the file back into iTunes, and it should go into your ringtone group.
9. Sync it on your iPhone and your set!!

Step 2 is a great idea and one I wish I woulda checked on. Easier than using wavepad to get the clip.
Although it doesn't have to be exactly 40 seconds. You can convert an entire song if you want. It will only play the first 30 seconds before it goes to voicemail. However if you use that for, say an alarm, it will play it.

There are lots of sites that offer creation, customization of ringtones for free (http://www.ringtonesmash.com/). Easy, fast and free. Offers are scattered all over the web just be careful in resourcing. Make sure they truly give free downloads without hidden fees.
Thanks anyways...[COLOR="Silver"]

I just got the iPhone 3GS and I went through the steps to downloading/creating ringtones, and was successful. I decided to get creative and create some more (about 10 more). I synced my phone, but it only showed maybe 2 of the new ones I created. I thought, "alright, maybe I just need to restart it." Restarted it, re-synced it, and now NONE of my custom ringtones show up. Very frustrating!!!! How do I ameliorate this problem without completely hating my phone and throwing it out a window?
