iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 3.1 was announced at today’s Apple event and it is already available to download today! The big things they showed off at the event were Genius recommendations for apps, Genius Mixes, download ringtones wirelessly, and the ability to organize apps in iTunes. Nothing that surprised me very much, although the organizing apps from your computer will definitely come in handy. You can find download links for all the device firmwares and a list of all the other new features or fixes in 3.1 inside!

- Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
- Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
- Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
- Option to ”Save as new clip” when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
- Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
- Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe
- Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
- Paste phone numbers into the keypad
- Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
- Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
- Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
- Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

@ Chaston.. Yes, there is a 3rd gen iPod touch, but it’s not as good as expected. No camera. A little faster processor, more storage, that’s really the main parts.
why does it say iPod touch 3G?

I’ve got an IPod Touch second G and I want to know how I can upgrade the firmware. I have downloaded the file from this page, I unzipped the file into a directory but when I am trying to resstore the file, there is no file extention which matches the restore file. Would you please help/guide me. I think I am missing one important part.

This update seems to be pretty sweet, one would think that if MMS is gonna be launched that the MMS Toggle switch has to be coming shortly. I am gonna assume it’s probably coming through a carrier update and not a firmware update. Pretty excited to see if the Dev Team or anyone is gonna get a unlock tool for this update.

I’m going to try and answer the frequently asked questions. First off, for all of you trying to jailbreak your ipod touch’s/iphone’s with the newest version of redsn0w: its not going to work, because it was made for the jailbreak of 3.0 (see the difference 3.0/3.1). Second, the link does work, but it has to be manually updated each day because of apple changes a “password” in the html daily. Third, the ipod touch 3g or 2g-s, is referring to the re-released ipod touch 2g with a few hardware changes, mainly a faster processor, but containing nothing truly noticeable. Lastly, just wait several days before the jailbreak comes out to upgrade to the 3.1 update, it will come out.

Second, I need to ask a favor that I hope will help many and not just me -and please forgive the semi-rant – would you make fewer assumptions about what the viewer understands when it comes to your instructional videos? I seem to ‘get’ 95% of what you are saying but that 5% that I don’t is a deal-killer. I own a 2G Touch and I seem to remember needing a file that the redsn0w app asks for, and I know it is a simple file that I should easily produce by finding a specific file and changing the file extension – but I don’t know what it is called because you only mentioned using the file AFTER it was changed – not how to find & change it THEN using it.
DISCLAIMER:
I think that’s what I remember. I am a little confused because you have a LOT of similar videos that overlap and they all tend to blur together right now. I may have learned about that file extension name changing detail from the redsn0w forum. If incorrect, shun me!
I would also request that you consider adding a Troubleshooting link with common error resolution process, along with a little more description in the conversion process that describes how long it usually takes (so I won’t fall asleep in front of my locked-up/frozen iPod because I think its still in-process) and what (if any) good or bad messages encountered are identified so we will know whether to abort and try again – or not.
